Episcopal Church, Diocese of Western Michigan records, 1866-1992.

The record group contains files of bishops and other diocesan officers. Bishops represented include George D. Gillespie, Lewis Whittemore, Charles E. Bennison, and Howard S. Meeks. The record group also contains committee files, publicity files, photographs, and records of different diocesan organizations. Within the papers of individual bishops, there are extensive files of correspondence, reports, and background information pertaining to the diocese's relationship with individual churches. Records of defunct diocese parishes or missions are included in this record group. Types of these records include registers, minute books, and record of services. Included here are the diaries (8 volumes) of the Rev. William C. White of Hastings, Michigan, for the period of 1897-1921.

Although the Episcopal Diocese of Western Michigan was not established until 1874, the Episcopal Church first began ministering in this areas as early as the 1820s. In the first decade after the Civil War, many new parishes and mission were established, leading to the establishment of a diocese separate from the Diocese of Michigan in December of 1874.
